Patchura and the Hermit of the Stars
Words and Pictures Tokio Hasegawa
Publishers Kodai Indo Gakuin
----
For the coral, their stars are
the wares swaying, flickering
and studding the sky.
The blue fish get together at the
island's water edge.
The song of Patchura and the
hermit of the Stars can be heard.
----
Tuun To Ton Tuun To Ton
Here is an island where the crabs can walk right round |
Here is a small coral island
One coconut tree is growing
thick on the white sands.
The voices of the crabs can be
heard, singing as they play.
Tuun To Ton
Tuun To Ton
----
I am looking for the star of Kaarii
If there are no shining stars right
above me
with my spear I'll pierce the stars
that can't be seen
on and on and on
Ton Kururuu Ton Kururuu
==
The star of Kaari |
Some stars that slip on will be big
By and by to there may be a hard star
with a very do face I’ll push with all
my might until at long last it will slip on.
Square stars and triangle stars too
Ton Kururuu
If the star slips on by its corner
The star will scatter a stream of lightening
Ton Kururuu
Further, further we look for the star
Till the bottom of the deep cosmos
we look for the green star.
The Star of Kaarii
Overhead is high, so high. Just above you a green star is bound to be twinkling - Deresuta (“unknown star" as it is also called). Once in thousands of years, This star appears to someone who can sense such things.
----
The waves are playing, rolling
around on the sand
Po Pom Poom
The blue fish crumble the
stars that are spread out
fully in the sea,
One coconut tree sings
in the wind.
The falling star is brought to a stop by the sea |
As far as the bottom of the sea there are stars
From time to time the stars are even shooting stars
Stars are like the fishes - they never collide.
Po Pom Poom
Even if the star is falling
The sea will stop that shooting star
Don
It cannot go to where the fishes are.
----
The fishes they like the stars
So they can meet the stars
in the night sky
If they all begin
to swim to the night sky,
How small will the sea become?
Purum Purum Purum
In order to meet the stars the fishes are swimming to the night sky |
The crab who is enjoying riding on the waves
thinks "How far away will the sea go?"
looking at the waves
Purum Purum Purum
Another crab finished pushing the white
sand to the outside of his hole;
He's stretching his back.
The fishes are swimming in a swarm
to the night sky.
The sea stretched out the waves answering
“The night sky is spreading a bit further"
----
Let's beckon to that star
which twinkles orange
hoho hoo
even such a high coconut
tree as that cannot reach
the star,
Can you bring this star here? |
Oh blue fishes
would you send me an answer?
hoho hoh hoo
Why it's easy!
Let it sink!
Just fasten on a rock as a weight
----
One white cloud appears on
the waterflat line
Suutoton Suutoton
flying to the blue stars in the night sky
Rainfall lurching to the island. |
Before long a black gown
dangles in the blue sea
Suutoton suutoton
Rain lurches to the island
The three-coconut-tree island
----
That night starlight falls
as far as every nook and
corner in the crab's hole
Toko Toko Toko Ton
In the shadow of the coconut tree
on the floating white sand
the crabs are diving in the sands
the crabs are running on the sands
The crab’s slumber |
O Crab
Is it such a good feeling
to sleep on the sand?
with just the sound of the waves heard
I think you can't sleep can you?
pirum pirum pirum
If I am in my hole
I can only hear them slightly".
----
Within these spacious stars
there are sure to be
stars
that you take a fancy to
The star who lives on the other side of the three-coconut-tree island |
*That star is a mother star isn't it?
My star
is the star that lives
on the other side
of the three-coconut-tree island.
*There was confusion in the age of Genesis and all became one mist. In that era, the stars possessing more profound parts attracted people to them. These were called the tempting stars (mother stars).
----
Did the ancient people
enjoy the moonlight?
Their spirits
merry like the crabs?
papam papam poh
Eyes altogether, we shall make the moon be light |
The blue fishes
the three coconut trees
the crabs
and the coconut tree
papam papam poh
light sting up the moon
eyes altogether
making the moon be light.
----
If the moon will clear a pathway
let's ride on the tortoiseshell
and listening to the tunes
the stars are playing
let's fly to the moon
fu turun fuu
He flies on a tortoiseshell up to the moon |
That purplish star is playing
a purple tune.
That moon makes a white shroud.
What is it playing?
fu turun fuu
Are your ears open wide?
Then can't you hear?
----
Stars-
just a minute !
is there or is there not
a little glimmer?
just a moment stars!
The seapilot of the Stars |
If the stars
are lifting up their prayers
in the forest of the deep cosmos
then let me hear
The prayer of all the stars.
The star Zoo |
-----
The star Zoo
where is it?
The star zoo is here
Open this entrance (eyes)
and look in!
The star Zoo |
The most far away star
is just here.
----
Suppose I sold the stars
Suppose I polished the stars
shuru shuru shin
The one who polishes the stars |
Suppose I climbed the coconut tree
To keep watch on the moon
Suppose I dug a hole for the crab
Suppose I went out to sell
two drops of fragile morning dew.
What is this I am?
shuru shuru shin
----
If all the stars in the night sky of this world
were raked together
how much would this world
Sparkle light?
pitakena pitakena
The stars of the night sky are gathered together |
Long ago
The stars in the night sky of this world
were all raked together by the gods
It’s already like this here isn't it?
pitakena pitakena
----
Anything of so very many stars
must surely be the shadow of the stars
If the shadow of the cosmos
are the blue stars
The shadow of the sea
are the blue fishes
One star holds the shadow of every star |
The star is twinkling lights
in such number
I am sure
the shadows of all the stars
are in this one star.
----
While a star is flitting towards
the three-coconut-tree island
The shadow of the coconut tree
is stretching towards
the waterflat line
pilala pilala
The shadow of the coconut tree reaches the waterflat line |
The sea is tinged with rouge
while the sun sinks down
radiating thousands upon
thousands of lines of light
pilala
The full moon is rising up
pilala pilala
----
Suppose that make my voice heard
for the stars!
Suppose that the wind grew stormy
and blew the stars around in the heavens
Here l go again
Suppose that the fishes went and ate the
stars
Suppose that the crab carried the pinetorch
of the moon
Suppose that the stars came
and listened to a wonderful story
The sea wind never takes a breath
Like the blue waves
The coconut tree never stop singing
----
Who hurled the rock
in to the cosmos
hika hika
In the blue ripples
I am only like a floating ship
hika nika
Sleeping in the sea of stars |
Here is the bottom of the night sky
a treasure of studded Stars
Open the entrance
of Mosujit (blue palace)
Shall we sleep in the star's sea?
Kerara Kerara Kerara
----
And before long
The audience of stars
grew numerous
in the moonless night.
The stars grew numerous and it became morning |
The light of the stars
would turn into morning, you know
----
A dazzling Thing
Sunshine
calls me from slumber
The darkness
closes my eyes
lu lulehla lu lulehla
walking up in the morning, it's a pleasure to see you |
In the morning
awakening....
I see you
That's a pleasure!
lu lulehla lu lulehla
----
The path to the stars has been closed
It isn't that there aren't always stars
Even if I'm so beside the stars
Even if I'm so encircled by the stars
Even if I'm so near the stars
If you're not always in a marvelous mood;
it just happens so.
Stepping to the star |
Stars are always around
The sea is always around
As for me, I want to become a star!
